Backpack, backpack, backpack, backpack. A new study finds 55 percent of students saying their backpacks cause them back, neck and shoulder strain. A physical therapist at Athletico South County, Ney Gana has this advice. Really you want to keep it at 15 percent or less of the child's body weight. So for a 55 pound child, that's about the weight of one gallon of milk. For a 110 pound child, that's going to be about the weight of two gallons of milk. Also, make sure they wear both straps across the back and place the heaviest books in the back pack closest to the spine.
